Gas Relief

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How does Simethicone / Gas relief work?

Simethicone doesn’t reduce gas, it just makes it easier for the body to expel by encouraging all the little gas bubbles caused by air swallowing, normal digestion and fermentation to combine into larger bubbles which are the easier for the body to expel.

They are easier to expel because the larger volume of gas stimulates peristalsis or increases the ‘yield’ pressure on the various sphincters so they open and gas can be expelled. In the UK, Simethicone is often given in a solution before capsule endoscopy so foaming bubbles don’t obscure the view of the capsule as it passes through the stomach and small bowel.
